"Supreme Court" Database

Since publication, in Proceedings of the National Academy Of Sciences, June 24, 2003, of my article "A Pattern Analysis Of the Second Rehnquist U. S. Supreme Court", I have been frequently asked for the database that was generated in preparation of the article.  It was always my intention to make this data available on my Web Site.  However, the pressure of other duties, and a desire to put this material in a polished form, delayed the process.

I have decided to forgo a "polished form", and place on this web site the basic material which people have requested and might find useful.  Perhaps in the course of time I will add to what is found below, and find time to polish the material.

As a guide to the web site I list below the material that can be downloaded.

1. An Excel file "AdmissibleSCcases94-02.xls" which contains the "admissible decisions" for each of the years 1995-2002, each as a separate "sheet", and as well a "merged" version.

2. Two Word documents, EnteredLog.doc which gives further information on each of the cases that were deemed "admissible", and NotEnteredLog.doc, a record of those cases that were deemed "inadmissible", with some explanation for this choice.

3. A Matlab "SupremeMatrices.mat" file, which if loaded in Matlab yields the decision matrices for individual years, and for the merged case, in an obvious notation.

In addition, since the published paper attracted some attention by the media I enclose as jpeg files, an article that appeared in the New York Times and one that appeared in the Washington Post at the time of publication of the article.

Finally, I also include a pdf of the published version of the article, and request that this paper be cited in publications based on the data contained on this web site.
